I received my copy last Tuesday at about 11am, opened it, read a few lines, and then a few more lines, and finally closed the book at 4pm, on page 82, because this is not a page-turner; this is a book to be relished, to be enjoyed, to be with Charles Bukowski and by extension with Joan Jobe Smith.

Before I discuss the book, a word about Bukowski. Bukowski took an entire generation lifro Los Angeles writers down the drain with him. I lost all my friends to alcohol and drugs. Better discover him before it is too late.

Yes, the story is decent, if you want to follow the seemingly autobiographical travails of an aging self-depreciating writer and drunk called upon to produce a screenplay he doesn’t really want to do, and his acidic send-up of Hollywood both people and entertainment industry, from the parties and ass-kissing to the slums and backstabbing that at times feels as though through the eyes of someone perpetually stoned and cynical. He is still drinking, of course, Sarah has him on wine now the true barfly versus the faux Hollywood barflies.

It keeps you from going totally mad. It overflows with curses, sex, and alcohol. This is true; but his writing is also rendered of all the fat o Breezy, easy insight into the making of Barfly, which is a movie I liked before I read Bukowski. That’s also the ah ha truth at the end of the book when a poet tells Bukowski that he’ll always be read because he writes simple enough for children to read. I am rather skeptical of this philosophy, but every time I read about his adventures with booze and women I tend to feel that I am missing something in life.
