The narration is simple and easy to follow, but what pulls the reader in are the violent, illogical acts of child abuse committed by the author’s mother that naturally lead to visceral emotions of disgust and shock.

What bothers me the most is the improbability of Dave’s statements. In this novel, Pelzer shows his courage and faith in his onmbre situation, and though sometimes he wanted to give up, he didn’t. Having worked with “at-risk” children and teens, I once picked it up at the store and found it repulsively graphic, seeming to sell itself based on gratuitous scenes of first-hand abuse.

The person that i actually hated more that the mother in the book was David’s father. I was in fourth grade, so I don’t think I fully comprehended the severity of what happened to David in the book.

Even worse than the writing, is the lack of credibility in the story. Pelzer is one of the only authors to have four books simultaneously on the New York Times Best Sellers List and the first author to have three books simultaneously on this list in trade paperback. The fact that it was a real story made it way sadder. I realize and recognize the serious abuse he endured, but I fail to see the reason he published a book about it.
